In the fifth instalment of Tattoo Diaries Volume Two, we meet Steve, who, after turning 60, decided to take the leap and get inked for the very first time. His journey, guided by Tembo at No Regrets Bristol, is a testament to embracing life, finding confidence, and discovering joy in unexpected ways. Photographed by Rotterdam-based photographer Sud, Steve’s story is a vibrant reminder that it’s never too late to get your first tattoo. Join us as we explore Steve’s story.

Taking the Leap: Steve’s First Tattoo
For Steve, tattoos had always been an intriguing idea, but never something he’d done. That changed when he hit 60 and wanted to mark the milestone with something memorable. Initially, he opted for a large earring as a playful choice, but the idea of a first tattoo lingered in the back of his mind.
When he came across Tembo’s abstract artwork, he felt an immediate pull. “There was an opportunity to do something really interesting,†he recalls. “After meeting her and visiting the Bristol studio, it was down to me to decide if I was up for it. The answer was obviously yes, we try to live by the maxim: Do it while you can because you might not be able to tomorrow.â€

Designing a Meaningful First Tattoo
Steve’s first tattoo became a full project: two arm sleeves and a chest piece forming a vibrant, abstract triptych. Unlike tattoos tied to a specific meaning, this one allowed him to interpret the imagery personally. The chest piece’s flowing wave of colour inspired Steve to see a heart at its centre, a symbol of life, vitality, and courage to take risks.
“That resonated with me,†he says. “If there was a heart pumping colour around my body, it must signify I’m alive, still able to do crazy things.†This heart motif became the central feature of his tattoo.

How Tattoos Can Transform You
Steve found that his tattoo brought more than just visual impact. “I was expecting to end up with something pretty that I might show to friends,†he reflects. “What I actually got was a bucket full of insights into what makes me tick, and some long-standing insecurities on their way to being addressed.â€
The process also encouraged practical changes, like improving posture, while giving him newfound confidence. “Previously, I’d always been self-conscious about my body. Yet now I find myself walking around Bristol streets being photographed. I wasn’t expecting that!â€
Even the reactions of family and friends added to the fun, from bemused friends to a father-in-law pretending it wasn’t happening. “I love it, as does my wife. That’s all that really matters.â€

Steve’s Tattoo Experience at No Regrets
From the beginning, Steve knew No Regrets Bristol was the right studio for his first tattoo. “They had by far the best vibe of the parlours I’d looked at,†he says. “The range of styles on offer was astonishing.†Working with Tembo, each session became a mini adventure, from breakfast at The Crafty Egg to settling in for a creative session, and the studio’s friendly atmosphere made him feel completely at ease.
First Tattoo, Lasting Impact
If Steve’s first tattoo could speak, it would say: Life’s short, do something crazy while you still can. His story proves that there is no age limit for creativity, self-expression, or embracing new experiences. Sometimes all it takes is saying yes to the opportunity and trusting the journey.
